San Fernando Valley Video Games Talk

Here's our first meetup.

Tentatively, I'd like to choose the Promenade Mall in Woodland Hills as our location. The food court there in front of the AMC has lots of seating and is quiet on weekday nights. It's perfect for us to gather around and get snacks from the surrounding restaurants.

***Look for the green "L" Luigi hat on the table.

Some topics I have in mind are any of the games that you all might have in common that you've played recently. For instance, I've played
Limbo
Alpha Protocol
Half-Life ...yes, the first game... for the first time
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

We could also talk about the xbox live price hike or the new ipod touch.

See the thread on the Message Board to add your desired topics.

UPDATE: I should add that I never intend these to last more than 2 hours. It's as long as the conversation is interesting. And, of course, I do plan on rescheduling if there aren't enough RSVPs. So please keep an eye on this post.

* Hooping can burn up to 400 calories in 1 hour by just basic waist hooping or 600 calories in 1 hour
by incorporating speed, tricks/movements & jumping to your hooping. *

* Most Hooping is low to no impact, so its wonderful for people of all ages and athletic abilities.

The reason for the donation is lending out the hoops, hosting, and time spent putting it all together. I hope to have refreshments there and to let you all know that your welcome & to bring your own as well, or to share. You can give your donation in 'person' or via 'Paypal' for pixiehoops@yahoo.com plus this will also help me to facilitate other Hooping events In the Foothills area.

Open link in a new window Doin' the big, Fig Newton Canyon

photoThe Weekday Trailblazers

It sure did get hot again, didn't it? Let's beat the heat with a refreshing Newton Canyon hike! Beginning off Kanan Rd in Malibu, we'll avail ourselves of coastal breezes, oak tree shade, and ocean views to stay cool while others swelter.

From the Kanan Rd trailhead, we'll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over to Zuma Ridge Trail. Along the way, we'll see how strong Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls are flowing this time of year; we'll make a return trip in late winter, after the rains, to compare. On the ridge, we'll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific.

Since streams flow through the canyon, there's an abundance of wildlife and plant growth. That plant growth includes poison oak, but this time of year it's turning both a beautiful and easy to spot shade of bright red.

This is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles, with 1000' total elevation gain.

Directions:

From the 101, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right.

From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel.

photoNature Friends, Los Angeles

Greetings! This week's hike Eaton Canyon / Walnut Canyon Loop.

DESCRIPTION: Another good hike to catch the sunset; about three to four miles round trip with moderate elevation gain on the ascent; mostly sunny and open with an occasional stream crossing and rock hopping. The trail is well maintained, especially the brief section of the Mt. Wilson Toll Road (we'll be able to stop atop the bridge for a scenic view of the canyon below), though the descent from Walnut Canyon is steep and partly eroded in spots.

THE BASICS: Be sure to bring drinking water (plus food if you like), a flashlight, and to wear appropriate clothes and footwear. Walking sticks are recommended for all hikes. There are no extreme athletes in our club and we tend to proceed at a walking pace so we can enjoy the surroundings and each other's company. All ages and abilities invited; dogs are also welcome!

This week we will begin promptly at 6pm... don't be late!. Our hike leader is Rosann Volmert. Stay tuned for weekly updates. Please RSVP with any questions.

See you there!

Open link in a new window Hike and Astronomy Night @ Lake Casitas

photoSimi Valley Hiking Meetup Group

This event does not have a host/organizer!

A late afternoon hike or a walk along the shore ? then, a view of the night?s sky without any city lights! We?ll meet at Lake Casitas? Picnic Area #1 at 5pm (that gives us approximately 3 hours to get situated, hike, grab a bite and do a little socializing before the stargazing begins at 8p) unless everyone wants to get out there earlier (let me know!). Well-behaved, friendly dogs on leash are welcome!

Hiking: According to the Lake Casitas website, there?s a biking/hiking trail (looks more like a paved road) that follows the east shoreline for approximately 1-1/2 miles (so, 3 miles round trip). However, there must be other trails that can be pursued for those desiring something ?more.?

Stargazing: Then, we?ll meet back at Picnic Area #1 for an evening of stargazing with NASA accredited astronomer Ernest Underhay who is described as ?an astronomer with a fund of knowledge and a ?far out? sense of humor.? Be advised, this is a public and open event and I would imagine they have a good turn out as it is only held once each month during the Spring and Summer.

Costs: There?s a $15 per car parking fee and a $2 per pet fee charged by Lake Casitas.

What to Bring: Bring blankets, chairs, binoculars and telescopes as well as flashlights, water, a picnic dinner and snacks. I?d also recommend a jacket as it might be chilly after dark.

Directions to Lake Casitas: 101N to Ventura, take the 33 Freeway towards Ojai (starts as freeway and continues as 2 lane road), after approximately 10 miles from the 101, in Mira Monte, look for McDonalds, then Taco Bell and then Wendy?s on the right hand side of the road. At the stop light immediately after Wendy?s (intersection of Baldwin Road (Highway 150) and the 33), turn left on to Highway 150 (Baldwin Road). Go west on Highway 150 approximately 3 miles. Turn left on Santa Ana Road. Entrance to Lake is within 100 yards of turning on right hand side. Proceed to Picnic Area #1. (Directions take from www.lakecasitas.info and are different from those provided by Mapquest.)

Lake Casitas Recreation Area
11311 Santa Ana Road
Ventura, CA 93001

Carpool: I highly recommend carpooling due to the distance and the high cost of parking ($15 per car).

Allow at least 1-1/2 hours travel time to Lake Casitas from Simi Valley (it?s about 49+ miles) due to the always heavy 101 traffic.

Here?s the link to the flyer on the Lake Casitas site (I pretty much lifted everything from the flyer here but it does include additional dates if you?re interested): https://www.lakecasit...

Santa Clarita Valley Meetups (Meetup.com) - Fri, 09/03/2010 - 11:07am

photoIntuitive Eating

Hello and welcome! These meetups are very workshop-centric, as I believe that it's not enough to talk about our relationship to food, but a certain amount of creative and gentle action must also be taken. As such, each meetup involves sharing individually about our week and our little successes and uh....challenges we navigated throughout the week in relationship to the practice we articulated the week before. We then read writings we did throughout the week, based on Geneen Roth's literature. We close the meeting with a gentle tummy/grounding meditation.

Each week we meet for approximately one hour. We've got some pretty exciting ideas in the woodworks for upcoming meetups. Example: an Intuitive Meetup breakfast, putting into practice some mindful eating meditation principles.

If you're interested in exploring your relationship to food in a loving, non-judgmental and essentially free-wheeling way, and if you're interested in the idea of looking at all of this through the lens of curiosity, I hope you'll join us.

Here's what you won't find here:

  • Food plans
  • Taboo Foods
  • Weigh-ins
  • Days of "abstinence"
  • A "disease" approach to eating and food

Hope to see you this Saturday and Saturdays, beyond!

    Cheers,
    Sarah
